Pope Visits Memorial of Italian Nazi Victims

On Sunday 27 March, Pope Benedict XVI paid homage to the 335 Italians who were massacred in 1944 by the occupying Nazi forces at Fosse Ardeatine on the outskirts of Rome, which he called an "offense against God." The Pope made a private visit to the commemorative monument to mark the 67th anniversary of the March 24 Ardeatine massacre, which was a reprisal for a March 23, 1944, attack on occupying German forces.

Blood-Stained Cassock from John Paul II's Attempted Assassination Exhibited in Krakow

Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, the personal secretary of Pope John Paul II, recently gave a Krakow cultural center the cassock he wore when Ali Agca tried to assassinate him on May 13, 1981. The public will be able to view the cassock on display after the May 1 beatification of JPII.

Pope Benedict XVI received an audience with Olafur Grimsson, the President of Iceland. The president brought with him a statue of the Icelandic woman Gudridur, who lived 1000 years ago. She visited the New World of America on a religious journey and is considered one of the great heroes of Icelandic culture.

The Jesuit Martyrs of Virginia

In 2002, the Diocese of Richmond opened the cause for the canonization of the Spanish Jesuit Martyrs of Virginia. In 1571, Fr. Segura and his seven companions were killed by hostile tribesmen at the St. Mary's mission sited on Virginia's Lower Peninsula, near the Chesapeake Bay - close to the spot where the English would permanently settle just thirty years later. After years of repairs, the Roman Forum has finally opened over 7 acres of land for public use. This land includes the House of the Vestal Virgins and its temple, a group of ruins known in Latin as the 'Atrium Vestae' that includes the Temple of Vesta.

It was the brother-in-law who ennobled the family. Sargent Shriver married Eunice Kennedy in 1953, seven years after going to work for her father, Joseph P. Kennedy. A decorated veteran and outstanding executive in his own right, Shriver would often be considered an appendage to the famous family - a man dominated by his wife and the junior partner to the brothers Kennedy.
