Catholics in Iraq are maintaining a strong faith despite persecution in their country, Iraqi bishops and seminarians explained to a group of young pilgrims at World Youth Day. “All young Catholics are brothers in Jesus Christ, and Iraqis need all (of them) to pray for the entire country, both Christians and Muslims, because Iraq is very important to Christianity,” said Samir Haddo Atallah, a seminarian from Mosul, Iraq. At noon on Tuesday 16 August , 4000 young pilgrims from Australia joined the Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell, 24 of Australia's Catholic bishops and more than 300 of our priests and seminarians for an official Down Under launch of World Youth Day in Madrid. All About World Youth Day

World Youth Day began with John Paul II's invitation to young people in 1984 to come to Rome for Palm Sunday. More than 300,000 turned out for the celebration.The following year - 1985 - coincided with the United Nations International Year of Youth. On Palm Sunday that year, young Catholics came to Rome once again. Then on December 20th, the Pope announced the first official WYD meeting for 1986. The second international WYD gathering took place in Buenos Aires in 1987.

Cardinal Rylko Welcomes Youth at Inaugural Mass (Tuesday, August 16)

Cardinal Stanislaw Rylko welcomed the more than 500,000 young people who flooded the Plaza de Cibeles at the World Youth Day Madrid 2011 opening Mass on Aug. 16. “The day we have all been waiting for has arrived,” Cardinal Rylko, the president of the Pontifical Council for the Laity, said. “After a long path of preparation you are finally here in Madrid, a beautiful modern city that will be the world capital of Catholic youth for the next few days...” Visit this article to read more.

It's official. World Youth Day is finally here. The big event kicked off Tuesday night with an opening Mass in Madrid's Plaza de Cibeles, one of the city's main monuments. It was surrounded by thousands of young people, who traveled from every corner of the world.
