Archbishop Tempesta's Message for World Youth Day Pilgrims

Orani João Tempesta, Archbishop of the Rio de Janeiro Saint Sebastian Metropolitan, has released a message for pilgrims preparing to travel to Brazil for World Youth Day 2013. In his message, the Archbishop reminds young people that during Pope John Paul II's visit to Argentina for World Youth Day in 1987, he reminded the young people of South America that they are the hope for the future - the Church depends on young people!

Christ the Redeemer May be Open 24/7 During WYD 2013

The main symbol of the city, Christ the Redeemer, is preparing for the increased flow of visitors during the month of July 2013, when Rio de Janeiro will host World Youth Day. At a meeting on June 2nd, WYD2013 organisers announced the proposal to open Christ the Redeemer to visitors for 24 hours per day.

WYD2013 Official Song will be Released 29 July 2012

In commemoration of the one-year countdown until World Youth Day, the Official Anthem for WYD2013 will be announced on 29 July 2012 in Rio de Janeiro. "The 'face' of Rio and of the Church in Brazil will certainly be present in this memorable song,” said Father Leandro Lenin, the director of the Pastoral Preparation Sector of the Local Organizing Committee.

Brazil's Copacabana Beach, Air Force Base to be Main WYD Sites in Rio

A Brazilian bishop and WYD organizer revealed today that Copacabana Beach and the Santa Cruz Air Base will be the venues for the main events of World Youth Day Rio 2013.

Registrations for WYD2013 Open July 2012

The WYD 2013 head office in Rio de Janeiro is preparing to welcome hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from around the world! You will be able to register on the official WYD website from July 2012, one year before WYD Rio 2013. According to Sister M. Shaiane Machado, Registrations Director, "All pilgrims who want come to WYD Rio 2013 should register. The Registration Sector is opening the door to WYD Rio 2013, and it will be from there that WYD will welcome everyone."

Short Video on the World Youth Day 2013 Patron Saints

The next World Youth Day will take place in Rio in 2013. Now, organizers have announced the five patron saints for the big event. The first is Our Lady of Aparecida, who is also the patroness of Brazil. A basilica is named after her and every year roughly 10 million pilgrims visit the site. Back in 2007 Benedict XVI made a visit, during his first trip to Latin America.
