The archbishop of Rio de Janeiro says the youth of Brazil are energetically preparing for the 2013 World Youth Day, particularly with prayer for the fruits and graces of the event. In an interview with Zenit, Archbishop Orani Joao Tempesta said the youth of his country are preparing the July '13 event "with great joy." Follow the World Youth Day Cross

In 1984, Pope John Paul II entrusted the World Youth Day Cross to the youth of the world. His words on that occasion were: "My dear young people, at the conclusion of the Holy Year, I entrust to you the sign of this Jubilee Year: the Cross of Christ! Carry it throughout the world as a symbol of Christ's love for humanity, and announce to everyone that only in the death and resurrection of Christ can we find salvation and redemption"(Rome, 22nd April 1984).

Pope: WYD Mission from Madrid to Rio

WYD Rio 2013: Stations of the Cross Through Slums

According to Cardinal Stanislaw Rylko, chairman of the Pontifical Council for the Laity, part of the famous World Youth Day 'Stations of the Cross' procession will go through the slums of Rio, giving hope to poor of the city. Week of Missions to Precede World Youth Day 2013 in Rio

World Youth Day Rio 2013 will be preceded by a week of missions throughout Brazil before hundreds of thousands of pilgrims arrive for the global youth event next summer. Father Jefferson Goncalves, director of pre-World Youth Day activities, said the country's traditional “Days in the Dioceses” will instead be a Missions Week to be held July 17-20 in 2013.
