World Youth Day Cross to Visit Southern Cone of South America

The apostolic nuncio to Brazil expressed joy Sept. 18 as the World Youth Day cross arrived in Brazil. He explained that Pope Benedict XVI wants the Brazilian youth to welcome it and to carry it to Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, the countries that make up the region of South America known as the Southern Cone.

Even though the next World Youth Day is about two years away, preparations are well under way. On September 18, the official World Youth Day website was launched. It includes all types of information, from registration to volunteering and of course basic facts on Brazil.

Rio Sees WYD As Boost for Brazil's Shrinking Catholic Population

Archbishop Orani João Tempesta of Rio de Janeiro says that the city is looking forward to hosting World Youth Day in 2013, which will be a welcome sign of hope for "our young people who are afflicted with problems like poverty, violence, and drugs."

Madrid World Youth Day's Shortcomings Offer Lessons for Rio

It was one of the most remarkable global manifestations of the Catholic faith in recent memory. But since pilgrims have started returning home from World Youth Day, some are talking about the disorganization they experienced and how the event could be improved. For example, around 100,000 of the 1.5 million pilgrims we refused entry into the venue for the Vigil and Final Mass, despite having the correct passes.

From 23-28 July 2013, the Corcovado’s giant statue of the Christ the Redeemer will welcome in its symbolic embrace young people from all over the world for the next international instalment of WYD in Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian Archbishop Orani João Tempesta said: “We want to show that Rio is not just sports and carnivals. Our day should be an opportunity for those of our young people who are afflicted with problems like poverty, violence and drugs”.

A delegation of young Brazilians present at Cuatro Vientos in Madrid erupted with applause at Benedict XVI's official announcement that the next World Youth Day would take place in their country in 2013. The Pope, who would be 86 years old at the next youth day in August 2013, told the delegation in Portuguese: “I hope to be able to meet you in 2 years (…) in Rio de Janeiro.”
