Official Hymn for World Youth Day Chosen

The official hymn for World Youth Day Krakow 2016 has just been chosen. The Local Organizing Committee WYD Krakow 2016 together with the Pontifical Council for the Laity selected a song Blessed the merciful by Jakub Blycharz as an official hymn for World Youth Day Krakow 2016. Congratulations to Jakub!

I PRAY FOR PEACE is an event organised by World Youth Day Krakow 2016 in preparation for the World Day of Peace which will take place on 1 January 2015. Young people from around the world are invited to pray for peace as our brothers and sisters in areas of conflict face injustices, brutal attacks, and immense suffering - we cannot stay indifferent.

WYD Cross & Icon Visits Ukraine as Pilgrims Pray for Peace

For the first time in history, the World Youth Day Cross & Icon visited Ukraine... a country which is in the grip of unrest and conflict. The Pilgrimage of WYD Cross and Icon in Ukraine was accompanied by a prayer for peace, and to coincide with this visit, the organisers of World Youth Day 2016 in Krakow started a campaign of prayer for peace in Ukraine, Syria, Iraq and all over the world on 9 September.

For Polish Catholics, 26 August marks the feast day of Our Lady of Czestochowa.The shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa looks down on the present day industrial city of Czestochowa, a city of some one hundred and sixty thousand persons, on the Warta River in South Central Poland, from a hill called Jasna Gora, the Mountain of Light, named after the white rock that forms it.

A Look Back at World Youth Day 25 Years Ago!

Twenty five years have passed since Pope John Paul II celebrated World Youth Day in the Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela. On August 18th and 19th, 1989 the Pope led the celebration along with more than 500,000 youths. It was the first time Spain hosted WYD. The theme was "I am the Way, the Truth and Life.'

Since around 2000 and especially since the World Youth Day (WYD) in Sydney in 2008, the Church in Australia has put a lot of energy into promoting the attendance of young people at the WYDs held internationally every three years. Australia has also now begun its own cycle of national events (the Australian Catholic Youth Festivals or ACYFs), also slated to occur every three years and modelled substantially on WYD.

Memories of WYD2013 One Year On - "Lord I Need You"

Exactly one year ago, pilgrims were begging to depart from Rio de Janeiro at the close of an incredible World Youth Day week. Perhaps one of the most beautiful and moving moments of the whole week was American singer Matt Maher singing "Lord I Need You" as Pope Francis prayed on his knees before the Blessed Sacrament at Copacabana Beach. As we celebrate one year since WYD2013, re-live this incredible moment in this video!
