The next World Youth Day will be held in Blessed John Paul II’s city, announced Pope Francis before praying the Angelus at the closing Mass of the 2013 Rio WYD. This will be the second World Youth Day in Poland, after Czestochowa in 1991.

Pope Francis: Next WYD in Krakòw, Poland 2016

It’s official: the next venue for World Youth Day celebrations will be Krakòw, Poland. Pope Francis made the announcement in Rio de Janeiro Sunday, the final day of his week-long pastoral visit to Brazil for WYD 2013.

His Holiness John Paul II - A Short Biography

Karol Józef Wojtya, known as John Paul II since his October 1978 election to the papacy, was born in the Polish town of Wadowice, a small city 50 kilometers from Krakow, on May 18, 1920. He was the youngest of three children born to Karol Wojty?a and Emilia Kaczorowska. His mother died in 1929. His eldest brother Edmund, a doctor, died in 1932 and his father, a non-commissioned army officer died in 1941. A sister, Olga, had died before he was born.
