Benedict XVI is the third Pope to visit the Holy Land. His trip took place from May 8-15, 2009. He largely followed the itineraries of his predecessors, visiting Amman, Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Nazareth. Highlights of his visit included the placing of the first stone for a future Catholic Church on the banks of the River Jordan, near the site of the Baptism of Jesus. The German Pontiff also visited the Yad Vashem and prayed for the victims of the Holocaust.
