Our generation has only known two Popes, and they have been amongst the greatest the world has ever seen. It has been through the inspirational and courageous leadership of Pope Benedict XVI and the late Blessed John Paul II that a new wave of Catholic young adults have deepened their faith, strengthened their conviction & been given new hope.

Benedict XVI's Last Speech as Pope

It was the first time ever a Pope's farewell was televised live. Benedict XVI left his home inside the Vatican joined by cardinals Angelo Comastri and Agostino Vallini. At about 5 p.m., before getting in the car that would take him to the helicopter, he said goodbye to the staff at the Vatican. Upon arriving at Castel Gandolfo, thousands of pilgrims, donned with banners, thank you signs and flags, cheered on the last few words of Benedict XVI as Pope.

Benedict XVI Farewells Cardinals, Promises 'Unconditional Obedience' to Next Pope

The last meeting between Benedict XVI and the cardinals was full of emotion and a few fun moments. In all, 144 cardinals greeted the Pope personally. But what stood out most was the announcement Benedict XVI made in his speech pledging absolute loyalty to the next Pope: “Among you, in the College of Cardinals is the future Pope, to whom I promise my unconditional reverence and obedience.”

Benedict XVI Leaves the Vatican

In his final hours as Pope, Benedict XVI said farewell to the Vatican's Secretariat of State, Cardinal Tarciso Bertone. He also said farewell to the Dean of Cardinals, Angelo Sodano, marking the end of his eight year pontificate. He boarded a helicopter before departing to the Italian town of Castel Gandolfo. It's a short trip of about 15 minutes.

Today is Benedict XVI's last official day as Pope. So let us pray for him today, and thank God for the life, vocation and Pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI - the gentle, humble man who is an example for all of us!
