Joseph reveals to us the task given to fathers to proclaim God's kingdom by word and deed. His unique role as "foster father to Jesus" draws attention to the truth about fatherhood, which is more than a mere fact of biological generation. A man is a father most when he invests himself in the spiritual and moral formation of his children. Joseph was keenly aware, as every father should be, that he served as the representative of God the Father.

It wasn't always the case that Msgr. Georg Ratzinger lived in the shadow of his younger brother, Joseph. Georg was an accomplished musician, who for over 30 years directed the world-famous boys' choir of the Regensburg cathedral. Brother Joseph was a brilliant young professor, but mostly known in German academic circles.

The Story Behind Joseph Ratzinger's Vocation

In his autobiography, then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, explained how the most important day of his life, was the day he was ordained. It was June 29, 1951. On that day, Cardinal von Faulhaber of Munich ordained the Raztinger brothers in the Cathedral of Freising. Georg was 27 years old. Joseph,24. His family was very religious, so their parents weren't really surprised by their decision. Watch this video for the story behind Joseph Ratzinger's vocation!

St. Joseph - A Foster Father for All

The Church celebrates the Solemnity of St. Joseph on 19 March. Joseph was an ordinary man, who said yes to God when he was asked to be the foster father of Jesus. Knowing that God trusted Joseph so much, we can also look to St. Joseph as a foster father, guiding us to make the right choices in life. Watch this video for more!

Into Joseph's capable, callused hands were entrusted God's most precious treasures. He was called by God to serve us all through the exercise of his fatherhood. He is God's absolute affirmation of men who are authentically themselves, engaging the world in those wonderful ways that are uniquely masculine, taking their places as heads of families, and providing dignity and keeping godly order in home and society through the work of their hands and other noble labor.

Who do you look to as an example for purity? In this video, young Catholics talk about the Saints that inspire them to live purity. We hear about the example of St Joseph - who despite living in Israel 2000 year ago, is example of living a manly and pure life for every modern male. We also hear the story of St Maria Goretti, which may seem exceptional, but modern women today are increasingly faced with the same dilemmas against purity.
