He is an advocate of the New Evangelisation called for by Pope John Paul II and is the Episcopal Vicar for Evangelisation and Renewal for the Archdiocese of Sydney. Bishop Porteous has published a number of books including, "St Brendan's, a Journey: The Story of an Australian Catholic Parish 1898 – 1998" (1997); "The New Evangelisation, Developing Evangelical Preaching" (2008); "After the Heart of God: the Life and Ministry of Priests at the Beginning of the Third Millennium" (2009). "A New Wine & Fresh Skins: Ecclesial Movements in the Church" (2010). During this time he has worked with his parishioners to revive a diminishing parish in a secular environment. The parish is now known as a centre of spiritual life and evangelisation. Fr Alexander is also the founder of the St Patrick’s School of Evangelisation, a one-year live in course to train young people for the work of evangelisation in their parishes and communities. Since then he has served as Assistant Priest or Parish Priest at the parishes of Kingsgrove, Manly, The Entrance, Woy Woy, Mona Vale, Annandale and Dulwich Hill. He has been actively involved in works of evangelisation throughout his priesthood, particularly among young people.
