Seventieth Anniversary Since Death of Martyr, Edith Stein

August 9th marks the 70th anniversary of the death of Edith Stein. She was a German nun that was killed in the gas chambers of the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1942. Originally born into a Jewish family, she was an Atheist as a teenager, and later baptized in 1922 at the age of thirty. She was then received into the Discalced Carmelite Order as a postulant in 1934.

August the 9th is her anniversary! That's timely cos August 9 is also the United Nations Day for the Recognition of Indigenous Peoples. This is a good synchronisiation, acknowledging her Jewish heritage with such a day of recognition. I found out too that she read the Autobiography of St. Teresa of Avila in one night and then her heart was transformed!
