WYD2016: What is the Message of Divine Mercy?

The Message of Divine Mercy will play a big part in the pilgrimage towards World Youth Day 2016 in Krakow. It is a message from God full of great love for the people of today’s world, written down by St. Faustina in her Diary.

In one of the revelations, Jesus said to her: “In the Old Covenant I sent prophets wielding thunderbolts to My people. Today I am sending you with My mercy to the people of the whole world. I do not want to punish aching mankind, but I desire to heal it, pressing it to My Merciful Heart.” Saint John Paul II said of the Message of Divine Mercy: “This consoling message is addressed above all to those who, afflicted by a particularly harsh trial or crushed by the weight of the sins they committed, have lost all confidence in life and are tempted to give in to despair.”

Through Sister Faustina, Jesus passes on to us five new forms of devotion. He reveals new ways to meet with God and to obtain His mercy for all those who are in need of it. In chronological order they are as follows:

  • The Image of Merciful Jesus with the signature, “Jesus, I trust in You!”
  • The Feast of the Divine Mercy in accordance with the wishes of Jesus Christ, celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter
  • The Chaplet of Divine Mercy, recited on ordinary rosary beads
  • The Hour of Mercy, that is a prayer at 3:00 p.m.— the moment of Jesus’ death on the cross
  • Spreading of Devotion to the Divine Mercy. Jesus invites everyone to proclaim the merciful love of God through the testimony of our lives: actions, words, and prayers
