The Parish Landscape: Changes, Challenges, Opportunities
Bishop Julian Porteous was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Sydney in 1974. Since then he has served as Assistant Priest or Parish Priest at the parishes of Kingsgrove, Manly, The Entrance, Woy Woy, Mona Vale, Annandale and Dulwich Hill. He has been actively involved in works of evangelisation throughout his priesthood, particularly among young people. Pope John Paul II named him Auxiliary Bishop of Sydney in July 2003 and he was ordained by Cardinal George Pell at St Mary's Cathedral on 3 September 2003. He is an advocate of the New Evangelisation called for by Pope John Paul II and is the Episcopal Vicar for Evangelisation and Renewal. In this opening talk he will examine the many changes that have occurred in today’s parishes and discuss some of the challenges that these changes present to parishes.
