The Cross, A Gift from John Paul II to the World’s Youth

Last edited 11th July 2011

The World Youth Day Cross has travelled with the Popes on their meetings with young people around the world since John Paul II handed it to them in 1984. This video from Rome Reports explains the history of the WYD Cross, and what it means for youth today.

My dear young people,
at the conclusion of the Holy Year,
I entrust to you the sign of this Jubilee Year:
the Cross of Christ!

Carry it throughout the world as a symbol
of Christ’s love for humanity,
and announce to everyone
that only in the death and resurrection of Christ
can we find salvation and redemption.

Pope John Paul II, 1984
