Pope greets pilgrims from Popemobile during World Youth Day (Friday, August 19)

After taking part in the Stations of the Cross, the pope passed by Madrid's Paseo de Recoletos and Plaza de Colon, where he greeted the faithfull up close from his popemobile.

Benedict XVI to young religious "Thank you for your generous, total and perpetual 'yes'" (Friday, August 19)

Around 1,600 young religious were met and thanked by Benedict XVI at the monastery of El Escorial. Four of them accompanied the pope through the door to enter the 'Patio of the Kings'. The cardinal and archbishop of Madrid, Antonio Maria Rouco Varela thanked the pope for his visit with the religious of Spain.

On his way to the Welcome Ceremony in Madrid's Plaza de Cibeles, the Pope was met by the mayor at Independence Plaza, one of the central points of Madrid.

After crossing the Puerta de Alcalá, Benedict XVI planted an olive tree in memory of his visit to Spain. A group of Spanish horse riders then welcomed the pope with a traditional bow.

The final Mass of World Youth Day was a sea of national flags. In the million-strong crowd, however, it was hard to find one particular flag – China. That’s until CNA bumped into Thomas Zeng. “This week has been absolutely fascinating,” said the university student who’s traveled all the way from Shanghai to be at World Youth Day in Madrid. John of Avila to be 34th Doctor of the Church

During WYD2011, Pope Benedict XVI announced that the patron of Spanish diocesan clergy will be named the 34th doctor of the Church. St. John of Avila -- not to be confused with St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila's partner in reforming the Carmelites -- is known as the Apostle of Andalusia.

Pope Benedict XVI officially declared San Juan de Avila (St. John of Avila) a Doctor of the Church. The title is a recognition the Pope gives to certain saints considered great teachers of faith, whose teachings are still relevent regardless of time. Currently there are 33.
