New "iGPII" Application For World Youth Day

Today, a Holy See Press Office press conference will be held to present the new "iGPII" application for World Youth Day! The application works on iPhones, iPods, iPads and devices which run the iOS operating system. The new application, an initiative of the John Paul II Youth Foundation, is available in five languages and will provide pilgrims with documents relating to the history of WYD, an events programme and timetable, GPS positioning, and information on accommodation, food and drink, etc.

The Prado Museum Joins WYD

In a first for the world of art, 'The Descent' by Caravaggio is visiting Spain. The Vatican Museums have loaned the painting to the Prado Museum in Madrid for World Youth Day. It will take part in the exhibition 'The Word made image' which consists of 14 masterpieces on the life of Christ.

Benedict XVI Is the 'Pope of Hope'

The prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Cardinal Antonio Canizares Llovera, is encouraging young people to see Benedict XVI as the 'Pope of hope': “Young people from all over the world, and especially from Spain, need a great message of hope, which is what they will find in their encounters with Pope Benedict.”

U.S. Based Media Producer Not Approved by WYD 2011

Please read this important statement from the WYD Office: "It has come to our attention that Michael Voris, a US based media producer, is scheduled to offer independent catechesis sessions out of a hotel in Madrid during World Youth Day 2011. There has been some confusion regarding his affiliation with World Youth Day. Michael Voris, the clergy and the laity associated with him, and their media efforts “Real Catholic TV” and “No Bull in Madrid” are not in any way recognized or approved by World Youth Day 2011."

WYD: 65 Vietnamese Going to Madrid, Thousands Study its Spirit

Despite many difficulties, 65 Vietnamese are expected at World Youth Day (WYD) in Madrid (16-21 August). However, tens of thousands of youth are taking part in pastoral and social activities organised by the diocese’s Episcopal Youth Commission in order to strengthen the WYD spirit. The goal is to empower a new generation of Catholics to allow them to embark on a new life and bring new energy to young Vietnamese.

Cardinal's Thoughts on Hosting His Second World Youth Day

For Cardinal Antonio Rouco Varela of Madrid, hosting his second international World Youth Day is a completely different experience to the first. The cardinal, who will be 75 in late August, was the archbishop of Santiago de Compostela in 1989 when Pope John Paul II met young people there for World Youth Day.

WYD Organizers: Preparations on Track, Minor Problems Need to be Solved

With a month to go before half a million young Catholics descend on Madrid, preparations are on track but "there are an infinite number of small problems to solve," said the executive director of World Youth Day 2011. Yago de la Cierva said July 18 that he has "seven tons of rosaries I have to bail out of customs," and other similar unexpected scenarios that make the WYD journey so unusual. WYD Tip: Don't Forget the Radio

It was a small radio that saved our World Youth Day experience in Rome 2000 as we were able to pick up the sound system at the main WYD events. We were able to participate in all the events and hear the Pope's address. The other advantage of the radio was that we could receive the english translation of the main events which were in Italian. read more why you should take a small radio to Spain here.
