Commissioning Mass for WYD2013 Rio Pilgrims

Last edited 8th July 2013

Many of the young pilgrims heading to South America and World Youth Day in Rio gathered at St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney on Friday night for a Commissioning Mass followed by a get together.

Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese, Bishop Julian Porteous celebrated the Mass with the other Auxiliaries, Bishop Brady and Bishop Comensoli and a number of priests who will be travelling with the group.

Around 300 young people attended the mass however around 550 will travel to Rio from the Archdiocese including a few hundred students from Sydney’s catholic schools.

Most of the young pilgrims will be leaving this weekend or early next week to take part in mission work in Lima, Peru or Argentina before travelling on to World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro on Monday 22 July.

Many of the pilgrims will be going firstly to Lima in Peru where they will go out on mission to help the poor by helping build infrastructure in the surrounding shanty towns.

On 24 July there will be a huge Aussie gathering in Rio when about 1500 pilgrims, priests and bishops will get together. However the big event will be the following day when Pope Francis arrives at Copacabana beach.. This will be followed on Friday with the Stations of the Cross, the Vigil on the Saturday and then the Papal Mass on the Sunday.

Following their time in Rio the pilgrims will travel to Iguazu Falls where they will “de-brief” after their mission work and World Youth Day.
