High Court in Northern Ireland Rules Abortion Law Illegal

The High Court in Belfast has ruled that Northern Ireland’s abortion legislation is in breach of human rights laws. In a landmark ruling the court has declared that abortion should be available in the case of foetal abnormality and rape - hence liberalising abortion law in the province.

Dorothy Day is the Perfect Role Model for Post-Abortion Women

As a 21 year old, Dorothy Day had a dalliance with another journalist, and became pregnant as a result. The fellow pressurised her to have an abortion, and in September 1919, 86 years ago this month, Day made a decision that she would bitterly regret for the rest of her life. She had an illegal abortion. Afterwards, Day was weighted down with a guilt-fuelled depression. Reflecting on Day’s distress, it calls to mind Pope Francis’ words last week, when he described post-abortion women as bearing, ‘the scar of this agonising and painful decision’.

There are few evils in this world that tear me apart like abortion does. I’ve prayed with women who were contemplating it; some didn’t do it, others did. I’ve held crying women in my arms for hours, days, and even years after they have had an abortion. There are no words I can find to describe the pain that an abortion causes – to the mother, the father, the baby, or the Lord.
