40 Hours for Vocations - A Weekend of Prayer in Sydney

More than 500 are expected to participate in this year's 40 Hours for Vocations at the Seminary of the Good Shepherd, Homebush this weekend. Beginning on Friday evening, 12 October in the Seminary Chapel, 40 Hours for Vocations continues throughout the night and the following day and continues until Sunday, 14 October with Benediction and Morning Prayer followed by Mass, and concludes at 1 pm.

It was September 21, 1953 and Jorge Mario Bergoglio was 17 years old. That day, at a church in the Flores neighborhood of Buenos Aires, he heard God's calling to become a priest. Now, as the leader of the Catholic Church, he will celebrate sixty years since he discovered his priestly vocation.

There has been much talk recently about priestly celibacy. Italian Archbishop Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s new Secretary of State, gave an interview to the Venezuelan newspaper El Universal, in which he discussed continuity and change in the Catholic Church. The interviewer raised the question of celibacy, and the archbishop replied that celibacy “is not a church dogma and it can be discussed because it is a church tradition,” dating to the early centuries of the church.

American Dominican Sisters Move to Scotland

One of the most flourishing religious congregations in America is to establish itself in a medieval convent in northern Scotland. Four Dominican Sisters of St Cecilia from Nashville, Tennessee, will be formally welcomed this weekend by the Diocese of Aberdeen during a celebratory Mass at Greyfriars Convent in Elgin. The four Sisters, popularly known as “Nashville Dominicans”, will reside at the convent in Elgin, formerly home to the Sisters of Mercy who left in 2010.
