Pope Francis: Vocations are About Quality, Not Quantity

Well-formed vocations are more important than numerous vocations Pope Francis said in address to religious formators on Saturday at the Vatican. “There is not a vocations crisis where there are consecrated people able to transmit the beauty of consecration with their own witness,” the pontiff said, according to Vatican Radio's translation.

When visitors enter the Jamberoo Abbey church, located in southern New South Wales, the first thing to strike them is the stunning backdrop of full-length glass windows behind the altar and tabernacle, bringing the beauty of God’s creation right into the heart of the church and allowing all who worship there to turn their prayer outward, for the world. The impact of the windows is no accident, according to the Abbey’s guest mistress, Sister Therese, but is an integral part of the church’s original design. “We are Benedictines and our work is to pray, so we pray for the world,” she says.

Sr Mary Michael of the Cross is one of five women in a new community of religious sisters called the Sisters of the Immaculata, which Archbishop Julian Porteous has made a public association of Christ's faithful within the Archdiocese of Hobart.

Now in its fouth year of what has become an annual tradition, the prayer-filled weekend involves 40 Hours of Adoration to pray for all men and women discerning vocations to marriage, the priesthood or religious life.

“Do you want to be a priest” isn’t just a question that was asked because I was woman studying theology. I think it comes from a deeper place, I think people are genuinely curious why the Catholic Church teaches that the priesthood is reserved to men. And let’s be honest, some people aren’t just curious about it, they are angry about it.
