Marian devotion is just an late medieval accretion to the faith, right? Think again! In addition to the important place she is given in the Gospels in the New Testament, meditation on the unique importance of Mary’s role in salvation history (known as Mariology) dates back at least to the early 2nd century. And the earliest known example of spiritual devotion to Our Lady dates all the way back to around A.D. 250. The Marian prayer is one you made have heard before: the famous Sub tuum.

In 1754, the woman Maria Mueces and her deaf-mute daughter Rosa were caught in a terrible storm in a river valley in Colombia. Desperate for help, they sought refuge between some large stones, when suddenly Rosa (who, as a mute, didn’t talk) cried out, “The Mestiza is calling me!” Her mother looked up and saw that her daughter was pointing toward a beautiful image on a rock of the Blessed Virgin Mary holding the baby Jesus, illuminated by flashes of lightening.

On October 7, the Roman Catholic Church celebrates the yearly feast of Our Lady of the Rosary - a feast day to pray for the protection of Christians around the world. Known for several centuries by the alternate title of “Our Lady of Victory,” the feast day takes place in honor of a 16th century naval victory which secured Europe against Turkish invasion. Pope St. Pius V attributed the victory to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was invoked on the day of the battle through a campaign to pray the Rosary throughout Europe.

Pope Francis has a special devotion to The Blessed Virgin Mary, Untier of Knots. It is the name of a Baroque painting entitled Wallfahrtsbild painted by Johann Georg Melchior Schmidtner (1625-1707) in 1700 and displayed in the St. Peter am Perlach in Augsburg, Bavaria.
