Pope Francis Canonizes Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Around 100,000 people filled Saint Peter's Square to attend the most awaited canonization ceremony of the year. Some Missionaries of Charity sat in the front rows, accompanied by around 1,500 impoverished men and women sitting in the front rows. With these words, Pope Francis officially declared the Mother of the poor a saint in the Catholic Church.

Psyche Mae, grew up in challenging circumstances in a village that was a relocation site for squatter families in the Payatas just outside Manila. When her parents first came to the area, they had few skills, no paid work and little hope for the future. Like many others, they were so poor, in order to survive they were forced to pick through rubbish from the nearby garbage dump.

When St. Junípero Serra de Mallorca went to evangelize in the United States, he took only two books with him. The Bible and the "Mystical City of God,” a biography of Our Lady, written by Mother Ágreda. This 17th century Spanish nun is considered a great mystic.

Saint Teresa of Avila - A Woman of Substance

Today (15 October) the Church honours the great Carmelite mystic, St Teresa of Avila, who started a reform of the Carmelite Sisters and Friars in the 16th century. Teresa was a woman of exceptional human qualities – warm, intelligent, witty, charming, adventurous, articulate and humorous too. We are familiar with her celebrated saying: “God deliver us from sour-faced saints!”

The Life and Lessons of St Thérèse of Lisieux

St. Thérèse of Lisieux is one of the most unlikely heros of the Church - she died at the age of 24 in a little convent in the north west of France. She was known only to her family members and a few nuns when she died. Yet when her writings where discovered after her death, she became not only a Saint, but a Doctor of the Church.
